Volunteer Services : Happy Wheels

Who We Are

In the spring of 1999, Larissa Allison of Murrells Inlet, SC created the idea for the Happy Wheels Program.  January 27, 2000 was Happy Wheels first visit to the children at MUSC Children’s Hospital. The program is still going strong 10 years later, thanks to the generosity of others. Happy Wheels is under the umbrella of MUSC Children’s Hospital volunteer program. All donations are tax deductible.

Happy Wheels cartWe are a volunteer dependant group that distributes new toys and books to critically ill or injured children. We collect donations from organizations, individuals, and small businesses throughout the year. 100% of all funds go directly to purchasing new books and toys for the children. We visit approximately 80-100 children each week. Without the help and generosity of others, this program would not run.

The Happy Wheels cart lets the children feel like they are standing in a store aisle looking at a huge shelf of toys. There are so many touching moments and it warms my heart to see their little faces light up. The children look forward to Happy Wheels Thursday, some leave messages with the nurses to let us know where they are and when they will return. No one wants to miss out on choosing his or her special gift.

We hope that each visit will offer children a special opportunity to make their hospital stay more enjoyable.

You can make a difference in a child’s life today by supporting Happy Wheels. It takes concerned and loving hearts like yours to keep these carts full of wonderful new toys and books.
