The objective of the research portion of the training program is to produce well-trained subspecialists in neonatal-perinatal medicine with a broad understanding of basic sciences related to neonatal-perinatal care and the ability to critically evaluate and apply medical research in clinical or research settings. Ongoing clinical trials, as well as established bench research in surfactant biochemistry and pulmonary physiology, neonatal nutrition, and pharmacological protection of the central nervous system provide exciting areas of investigation for trainees. Clinical research trials may involve clinical pilot trials, sub-studies of established clinical investigations and multicenter trials and epidemiological research.
The Division of Neonatology supports two PhD investigators (areas of major interest include neonatal nutrition and protein biochemistry and protein structure as ti relates to biological function) with a strong history of extramural funding, including several NIH sponsored investigations.
Research in clinical epidemiology, mentored by faculty with doctoral degrees in epidemiology and a talented database management team, ensures that graduates are well-equipped for career development in an academic or private setting.
Classroom education is provided to provide a foundation by which clinicians and investigators may become familiar with basic approaches to investigation and tools required to properly interpret investigation in clinical settings. These include courses on regulatory requirements pertinent to medical research, biostatistics, ethics and evidence-based medicine courses, and a regularly scheduled research and scholarly activities conference.
