The pediatric cardiology and surgical specialists at MUSC Children's Hospital provide inpatient and outpatient diagnostic, treatment and follow-up services for a full range of pediatric cardiovascular disorders.
Our Children’s Heart Center also serves as the tertiary referral center for the highly respected Children's Heart Program of South Carolina. The Children's Heart Program is a network of pediatric cardiology providers and outreach centers throughout the state, offering comprehensive inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular care to all South Carolina children and surrounding regions. The 2015 – 16 edition of U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Children's Hospitals has once again ranked MUSC Children's Hospital as a "best hospital" for children's heart programs.
Since the earliest days of congenital heart surgery, all of the specialists caring for children with heart disease in the state of South Carolina have worked together to coordinate care and provide the best possible outcomes to our patients. Today more than 30 pediatric cardiologists throughout South Carolina and 2 pediatric cardiac surgeons in Charleston provide that coordinated care. Cardiology groups are based in 4 locations — Charleston, Columbia, Greenville and Florence — with outreach clinics in a variety of other statewide cities. Outstanding outcomes coupled with an individualized approach to each patient has resulted in referrals now coming from across the southeast as well as many foreign countries To optimize the care of the most critical patients, all of the surgical and catheterization procedures are performed in The Children’s Heart Center at the MUSC Children’s Hospital. This system allows for the highest level of care by the specialized teams while still assuring that most of the patient’s care is delivered closer to home. This coordinated approach is unique to our state and we are proud to work so closely with our statewide colleagues to provide it.
The mission of the Children's Heart Program is to provide the best possible coordinated cardiac care to this patient population. Clinical evaluations for problems ranging from the more common occurrences of chest pain, murmurs, fainting and palpitations to complex forms of congenital and acquired heart disease are performed at offices located throughout the state.
We also provide care for infants in our state-of-the-art Pediatric Cardiology Intensive Care Unit (PCICU), as well as heart health and preventive cardiology through our Heart Health Program.
