Craniofacial Anomalies & Cleft Palate Clinic

One of our wonderful patientsThe MUSC Craniofacial Anomalies & Cleft Lip & Cleft Palate team (MUSC team) is a multidisciplinary group dedicated to the care of patients with cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial abnormalities. The MUSC team is recognized by the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association and includes representatives from the fields of audiology, genetics, oral surgery, orthodontics, otolaryngology, pediatrics, pediatric dentistry, plastic surgery, and speech and language pathology. Other disciplines, such as neurosurgery and orthopedics, are available to patients as needed.  The MUSC team is associated with Children's Rehabilitation Services (CRS). Some of our families meet with a team member prior to the birth of the baby. This happens when the cleft is identified prenatally with ultrasound. These families are given extensive information including special bottles and training in the feeding of an infant with a cleft palate. All children are followed by the entire team following their birth. Team members also are available to families to offer support and respond to questions and concerns.

Our Mission

The Medical University of South Carolina Craniofacial Anomalies & Cleft Lip & Cleft Palate Team strives to provide optimal care services for patients with cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial anomalies through an interdisciplinary team approach.  The center adheres to the American Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Association (ACPA) guidelines for treatment and management and currently is recognized as a craniofacial as well as cleft lip and palate center by this organization.  The clinic is located at the Medical University of South Carolina Medical Center and the patients, in addition to the specific services of the Craniofacial & Cleft Lip & Cleft Palate Team, have access to other hospital and clinical services.  Established in 1956 as The Cleft Lip and Palate Team, it became the Craniofacial Anomalies & Cleft Lip & Cleft Palate Team in 1995.
